Soul Dragged back into my body, back to reality — colored pencil art by a Star Sign School student
A Deaf School in Northeastern India

Star Sign School

Senapati, Manipur, India — a rural village near the Myanmar and China borders.

Star Sign School is a deaf-led school for deaf students, founded in July 2023 by Esther Sha Zingkhai and her husband Vividson Sha — both deaf themselves. The mission: education, computer skills, business, and career development tailored for the deaf community.

Six deaf students at Star Sign School drew artwork for Mad Mav: The Fugitive. They were the most reliable, committed, and fastest artists of the entire roster — turnaround averaging three days, sometimes faster. The collaboration started with a single email from Esther, containing one cute little artwork by a student named Sotam.

Every copy of The Fugitive sold contributes to the funding of artists like these. The Mad Mav project exists in part to put deaf students' work into the world.

None of this would have happened without Esther. She saw Mavrick broadcasting on social media in search of deaf artists, and sent one email — one piece of artwork from a student named Sotam attached. That email started the entire collaboration.

"As a Deaf individual myself, I understand the importance of creating opportunities and providing support for the Deaf community. My students have skills in art, and I want to support them."
